WHY EQUITY (CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK)
Why Prioritise Equity Over Equality
While equality advocates for identical treatment across all individuals, equity acknowledges and addresses the varying challenges and realities people face. Specifically, women face numerous interconnected disadvantages that significantly affect their lives. These disadvantages are often influenced by:
Gender Norms:
Societal expectations and stereotypes regarding gender roles limit opportunities and reinforce existing inequalities.
Economic Precarity
Many women find themselves in unstable financial circumstances, often stemming from underemployment, wage gaps, and limited access to financial resources.
Social Stratification
The hierarchical divisions within society that lead to differential access to resources and opportunities based on class, race, or other factors.
Institutional Exclusion
Systemic barriers that prevent women from participating fully in various sectors, including education, politics, and the workforce.
Digital Divides
The gap between those who have easy access to digital technology and the internet and those who do not disproportionately impacts women, especially in rural and underserved communities.
Equity seeks fairness rather than mere sameness, emphasising justice in context while actively working to redistribute opportunities to those who have historically been marginalised.
Within the framework of the AICWETE( ALL INDIA CONFEDERATION FOR WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT THROUGH EQUITY), several key principles emerge:
Education as a Pathway: Access to quality education is recognised as a crucial stepping stone that empowers individuals to break cycles of poverty and inequality.
Livelihoods as Instruments of Autonomy: Securing stable, sustainable livelihoods enables women to gain economic independence, giving them greater control over their lives and decisions.
Health as a Precondition for Dignity: Comprehensive health services, including mental and reproductive health, are essential to uphold women’s dignity and allow them to thrive.
Rights as Mechanisms of Agency: Advocating for women’s rights provides a foundation for self-advocacy and empowerment, enabling women to assert their needs and desires.
Leadership as the Culmination of Empowerment: Encouraging women’s leadership across fields is critical, as it reflects the culmination of equitable empowerment and showcases diverse perspectives in decision-making.
